Have you thought about what sort of tone that you want the personality of your blog to have? Does that even sound like a rational question? It should, in my humble opinion. The persona that you put forward in anything that you write online or off should be something that you give some thought to.
The main topic of your blog will probably dictate a little of that personality. I take on a bit of a different personality on each of my blogs. I think that my own personality comes through on all of them but on one of my blogs, I am Bev the teacher of spiritual thoughts and lessons. That Bev is a little more subdued to fit the content that I write each week. On another of my blogs, I am Grandma and that Bev has a tendency to be a little lighter in her presentation of content. Then there is the Bev who loves history and is fascinated with the Old West. Sometimes she is a little serious and other times not. Sometimes opinionated and other times searching for answers.
My point in this post is to have you think about how you present your content on your blog. I don’t know of many people who enjoy reading dry material. You know…just the facts ma’am sort of stuff. I have a tendency to write much like I talk. Sometimes I need to be serious while I’m talking and other times I can be casual. If you think about it, you can start to research a topic and read possibly three different accounts of the same information. Basically each is giving you much the same information but each is different in its own right. It is the personality of the author that makes the difference in whether you enjoyed reading their content or possibly did not enjoy reading it. Since one of your goals should be to have a regular audience of people who return to read your blog, putting your own personality into what you are writing is important.
Your personality will make the content original and appealing. How might you go about doing this? Well, for me, I jot down facts and thoughts about things that I want to include in what I am writing about in a sort of bullet point fashion. Once I have gathered all the information I want to include, I then use those notes to write the story in my own words with my own enthusiasm for the topic coming through. You will find your own method for doing this, I’m sure. Never be afraid to show your personality in your writing, it is what makes the thoughts or content unique.
Yes, personality is what differentiates one blog from another that covers a similar topic. I try to write as though I am talking to people and I find it sometimes helps to read my content outloud to see what it actually “sounds” like. This will help you see for yourself whether your writing sounds natural.
